GameStick looks to complete with OUYA, now up on Kickstarter

While OUYA happens to be the first Android-based gaming console to really see success so far even if it is just a successful Kickstarter campaign and developer support right now, there is a new kid on the block aiming to compete with OUYA called GameStick.

GameStick looks to compete with OUYA and it has a neat little gimmick that it will try to do that with. That gimmick is the fact it will be a pocketable gaming console system. While OUYA is pretty small, the size of a Rubik’s Cube, that still is a bit hard to stuff in your pocket. GameStick, however, will be able to easily fit into your pocket.

How will it accomplish this? By providing the console platform on a USB that fits inside the top of the controller that comes with this console. This will also be an open platform like OUYA is and the company behind GameStick is already working with developers to port their games over as well. Hardware-wise, GameStick sports a  dual-core Cortex A9 chip at 1.5GHz along with a dual-core Mali 400 GPU at 400MHz, has 1GB of memory and 8GB of flash storage.

It will also have connectivity through both Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11b/g/n and will support gamepads, mice and keyboards. It will also support up to four controllers at once and come powered by Jelly Bean.

GameStick looks to take on OUYA in different areas as well aside from being more portable friendly and that is through pricing as well. A GameStick unit will run about $79 and is slated to ship starting April 2013, just one month after OUYA’s slated launch. Right now the GameStick Kickstarter campaign is sitting at a little under $30K of their $100K goal.
