Kuboom promises cross-platform multiplayer shooting action, but falls a little short

Currently in beta, Kuboom is an online first person shooter. The developer claims you can play this game on your pc or android device. At the time of this writing, I have only played the android version so this review will concentrate on that.

It’s your traditional shooter with left thumbstick for movement, right thumb for shooting, jumping, and changing weapons. There are skins you can buy with money won from matches. Your character looks like a lego person and the maps have a very minecraft look to them. Very blocky and colorful. Also for purchase are weapons like pistols, shotguns, and assault rifles. You can also buy grenades and health packs after you’ve unlocked them.

Now for the issues hindering this online shooter. Remember this is only beta, so these issues may soon be resolved. There are about a dozen maps and 3 game modes. Deathmatch, team deathmatch and bomb. When checking the server list to find a game, there was nobody online to play with. After repeated attempts, I finally found a match that had 1 person in it. This could be because the game is brand new and not a lot of people are downloading it yet. Even before finding a game with someone in it, I tried entering other maps just to see what they looked like. 80% of the time the map loaded to a black screen, I could see my gun but nothing else. It was disappointing, because the times it did load the maps looked like a lot of fun to play on. Another issue was even though the main page, skin, and weapon shop were all in english, when you paused the game to try and leave a match, it was all in russian. The only way I knew which button to exit was because there was a green button and a red one.

I was really looking forward to playing Kuboom, but in it’s current state it needs a lot of tweaks to get it running properly. Although it is free to downlaod and play, my suggestion is to wait ’til a final version is released. Or if you’re feeling adventurous you could try it out right now.

If anyone is playing on the PC version of this game, what was your experience like? Leave your comments below.
