Amphibians have incredible reflexes. Not only can they shoot out their tongues to snatch insects from the air, but they can use these same tongues to hoist themselves upwards by latching onto bubbles.

Okay, so that last part may not be true, but it’s the premise of Bubble Toad, a charming new casual action game from developer Honeypony Games.

The goal is to get a toad through 18 unique vertical levels by tapping bubbles on the screen. But there’s a catch: not all bubbles are the same.

Some hoist you up, while other spiky ones must be avoided. Others contain keys, and that means there are yet more bubbles that contain locks.

But that’s not all. As you make your way through the game you’ll encounter a whole variety of bubble types, adding to the fearsome challenge of picking your way through a vertical minefield of bubbles using only your tongue.

Some bubbles contain coins, and you can save these up and spend them on over 100 different outfit parts to dress your toad up in, or new avatars to buy.

Bubble Toad reminds us a lot of games like Ridiculous Fishing, Bloons, and Jetpack Joyride, Not only does it boast simple one-thumb gameplay, but you can’t put it down once you start playing it, particularly in the high score-chasing Time Attack mode.

It may not look super-original, but Bubble Toad is a smashing example of the genre with a fun premise, stylish cartoon visuals, and slick, action-packed gameplay.

See for yourself by downloading it for free right now on Google Play [get] and the App Store [get].
