The 9 best western RPGs on Android

Knights of the Old Republic

Everyone loves western RPGs – and why wouldn’t they? They offer the quintessential gaming experience, providing longevity, progression, and character development in spades.

You might scoff at the idea of an RPG on your mobile, but they work like a treat. They’re lengthy experiences, so it’s handy being able to nip in and out as you need to.

But there are a lot of games on Android, so you may have no clue where to start. That’s where Droid Gamers comes in, with this handy list of the nine best western RPGs mobile has to offer.

Best of the western RPGs: Knights of the Old Republic

If, for whatever reason, you can only pick one game, make sure it’s Knights of the Old Republic. This is hands down the best RPG available on mobile, and a contender for the best in the genre ever. It really is that good.

This is a Bioware game from back when the Mass Effect developer was actually good, and this may well be its crown jewel. Get it.

Baldur’s Gate I and II: Enhanced Editions

If Knights of the Old Republic is where Bioware soared, this is where it found its feet. Baldur’s Gate and its sequel are absolute classics, if a little rough around the edges.

They’re a little obtuse and unfriendly, but based in a rich fantasy setting with a ton of interesting characters to meet. If you’re in it for the long haul, this is the choice for you.

Planescape: Torment

Planescape: Torment is another classic isometric RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons, but this one was developed by Black Isle Studios. You know, the developers who created the Fallout franchise.

There’s less of a focus on combat here, and more on the plot, characters, and dialogue. If that sounds more up your alley, opt for this over Baldur’s Gate.

Titan Quest

Titan Quest is an action RPG based on ancient mythology, which sets it apart from the others in this list. It’s a port of the 2006 classic, and the visuals hold up nicely today – particularly on a nice Android phone.

You’ll create a character and then hack and slash your way through a bunch of different ancient civilisations. Play this if you’re into Diablo.

The Bard’s Tale

The Bard’s Tale is an amusing action RPG that sees you play as the anti-hero Bard as he tries to rescue a princess for nefarious purposes. Its tongue is firmly in its cheek though. The game parodies everything from fantasy movies to games themselves.

Oh, and Cary Elwes does the voice of the Bard. Need I say more?

Shadowrun Returns

How about an Android RPG that was actually built for mobile? Well, that’s what you get in the excellent Shadowrun Returns.

This riffs on classics like Baldur’s Gate but is based in futuristic noir fantasy universe that is Shadowrun. There’s tactical combat, a wide variety of environments to explore, and interesting characters. Just get it.

Battleheart Legacy

The original Battleheart was an interesting RPG battler built from the ground up with mobile in mind. You controlled four heroes at once, and tapped and swiped around the screen to beat enemies and use skills.

Battleheart Legacy expanded on this though by turning the franchise into a full on dungeon crawler. With lovely 3D visuals, a wide variety of classes to master, and a massive world to explore, this is one worth checking out during longer flights.

The Shadow Sun

The Shadow Sun was developed by ex-Neverwinter NightsThe Witcher, and Baldur’s Gate veterans, and made exclusively for mobile. These devs sure do know their stuff.

It’s a fully-fledged Bioware-style RPG right on your mobile, featuring an interesting plot, characters to get to know, and classes to experiment with.

9th Dawn II

The 9th Dawn franchise harkens back to the Ultima days, when western RPGs were just as big as Skyrim but very lo-res. There’s so much to see and do here.

You can choose from a variety of classes, build them up however you’d like, and explore a massive open world.
