Developer Savy Soda aims to correct that with Pixel Starships, “the first total spaceship management game in an 8bit massive online universe.”

Echoing the cutesy visual style of mobile megahit Pixel People, Pixel Starships gives you full control over the running of a starship, from construction all the way to potential destruction during a space battle, all in a single persistent virtual universe.

Not only that, but you can play it with friends all over the world. Make no mistake, this is a hugely ambitious community powered experience that’s – arguably – out of this world (sorry).

First you have to design and build your starship, before setting out to conquer and command numerous different alien species, races, and factions. While in deep space you can create additional support craft to augment your ship.

You’ll be involved in recruitment, as well as research, exploration, and all-important diplomacy, all while viewing your starship in cross-section, like a set in a Wes Anderson film.

Exploration doesn’t just occur at the interstellar level. You’ll also be able to explore individual planets, and hunt for secrets.

All the while you’ll need to ensure your ship is in tip top shape at all times, keeping an eye on its power and resources, and equipping the epic weapons you find along the way.

Space, the endless frontier

You also need to manage your crew. Thankfully, you can program situational AI commands to make them carry out certain tasks automatically depending on what’s happening — even combat.

By the way, you won’t be doing all this in a lonely void. Pixel Starships is a multiplayer game, with players around the world sharing your universe, getting in the way or joining up with you to form alliances.

It’s a free-to-play game, but don’t worry: everything you can buy via IAPs is purely cosmetic, so there’s no way to buy your way to multiplayer dominance. Strategy and diplomacy are your only paths to victory.
