Netflix is Bringing Braid: Anniversary Edition to Android

Braid: Anniversary Edition official artwork.

Braid is one of the founding fathers of the indie gaming craze, which kicked off thanks, in most part, to Xbox Live Arcade back in the 00s. It was easily one of my favourite games on the platform, alongside Bastion, Torchlight, and Limbo. What a time that was.

And now, Netflix is bringing Braid to mobile in a brand new Anniversary Edition, which completely overhauls the visuals for 2024. The original art style is intact, but it has aged since its 2008 release. The Anniversary Edition cleans it up for a modern audience.

It also includes an entirely new world, which is very exciting for those looking for an excuse to go back. If you’d like to learn more about the development of the game, you can listen to over 15 hours of developer commentary while playing.

What’s Braid?

Braid launched on Xbox Live Arcade back in 2008, and was one of the early hits on the platform. So much so that it later arrived on PC, PS3, Mac, and Linux.

It sees you play as Tim, who has to rescue a princess from an unknown monster. That’s a deliberate nod to Super Mario, before you go and get upset.

How Does it Play?

The gameplay takes place over a number of levels, and sees you trying to collect a series of jigsaw pieces to complete images. Each image takes place in a different world, and by completing all of the levels, you collect the jigsaw puzzle for that world. It’s very satisfying.

The levels are your typical, Super Mario-style platformers but with puzzles to solve. You may have to get a key to unlock a door, defeat enemies, or avoid obstacles. You can manipulate time by rewinding or fast-forwarding, and use this to solve the game’s puzzles.

When Does Braid: Anniversary Edition Launch?

You can learn more about Braid and the Anniversary Edition on the official site. It launches April 30, 2024 on Android via Netflix.
