Mario creator enjoys Angry Birds but we won’t see Nintendo making mobile games

Despite Nintendo’s insistence that mobile games are “cheap”,  it is surprising to find that its lead franchise creator enjoys some Angry Birds. According to an interview with Edge, Shigeru Miyamoto, the mind behind classic franchise such as Legend of Zelda, Super Mario and a slew of other Nintendo series. has admitted that Angry Birds by Rovio was his favorite game of the past year.

“I usually don’t comment on these sorts of questions…What I like about Angry Birds is that it has a traditional video game [feel] to it, but also a very creative side. And you can really feel that they’re having fun developing the game. That’s what I like about it.”

Last year current President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata told EuroGamer that despite mobile games taking some market share from Nintendo’s handhelds, the possibility of the company entering the mobile front is slim: “This is absolutely not under consideration…If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo”.

He also expresses his disdain with mobile game developers:

“…Have no motivation to maintain the high value of video game software..For them, content is something created by someone else,” he said…Their goal is to gather as much software as possible: quantity is what drives their profit. Quality does not matter to them…. We must focus on a single question: is maintaining the high value of games a priority or not? What we produce has value, and we should protect that value”.

While I do agree with some of his points, specially when developers are flocking for freemium models for a quick buck. However it’s nice to see someone like Miyamoto see past the black veil of mobile games and enjoy them for what they are — fun games.
