Doctor Who: Mazes of Time Review - So much potential but falls short of what it could be.

b_500_274_16777215_0___images_stories_reviews_doctorwho_doctor-who-android-game.jpg

Now I’d love to give the readers a full review. However, I seem to share the same fate that some of you that will download this game will be forced to live through — those dang force closes! The game is almost fun enough that the frustration of the force closes are worth it because I tended to be able to get a bit further each time before the game froze up.

Name: Doctor Who: Mazes of Time | Developer: BBC Worldwide | Genre: Arcade & Action | Players: 1 | Version: 1.0.3 | Size: 46MB | Price: Free (Full) |

Keep in mind that some of you won’t have freezing and force closing, and you’ll know pretty quickly if you’re going to have to deal with this or not. So, in my mind, it’s worth giving the game a shot if you’re a Doctor Who fan. The initial set of levels is free, with further downloadable content packs available to purchase. Each pack will unlock a new set of levels, with new monsters and challenges to beat.

Doctor Who Features:

  • Travel through time and space to seven unique locations and over 100 levels
  • Increasingly complex environmental challenges to challenge your mind and reflexes
  • Play as both the Doctor and his companion, Amy Pond, utilising their unique skills and abilities to solve challenges
  • Features Daleks, Cybermen and Silurians – each with unique behaviour that requires different strategies of stealth and subterfuge to complete levels
  • Authentic music from the show
  • Wide variety of OpenFeint achievements

The controls are very simple but a bit quirky sometimes. It’s really hard to describe the graphics. As you can see from the screen shots they’re a blended up quality of cartoony, cheesy, and pretty good. Amy’s not done too bad; the good Doctor on the other hand could use a bit of work.

I think the most frustrating part of this game (aside from the freezing and force closing) is that Amy doesn’t automatically follow Doctor Who. So after moving Doctor Who to a location, you’ll have to touch on the character option on the top right of the screen to pick Amy and guide her to where the Doctor is (or visa-versa if you chose to have Amy travel first). This is one thing the developers could do to vastly improve the game. Speaking of which, I don’t think the developers have touched this game since they first published it on the market.

Really this game could be awesome. And it’d definitely be one of my favorite if it received some developer love updates. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, the game is definitely worth checking out. After all, you might not have the force close issues. And, hey, it’s free and fun.
