As part of our extended GDC 2012 coverage, we ran into the fine folks from LunarG who have developed an SDK that will let Android game developers add features to their games that will let players record and share in-game recordings just by installing a free SDK. Best part is, you won't need root as a player. InnoGames have been around for quite awhile having developed and published a lot of browser-based MMORTS games with their flagship title being Tribal Wars. We got a chance to sit down with Dennis Heinert, Head of Public Relations at InnoGames during GDC 2012 where we learned that InnoGames is planning on bringing all of their in-house developed MMO titles to Android. Another game we got to get some serious face time with was Sega's upcoming Sonic 4 Episode II title for quad-core Android devices. Aside from being able to get a good idea of how the game looks and plays, there is also a rumored release date floating around right now as well although no official confirmation of this date has been given. Spacetime Studios were on hand at GDC 2012 showing off their upcoming MMORPG for Android called Dark Legends. Let it be known right now this is not the Twilight type of vampire in this game with the whole sparkly drama filled emotional wreck the movies are. Instead, this game contains more of the True Blood type of vampire. You may or may not have heard about Nexon before although we are thinking you have in some fashion. They have developed a lot of hugely popular browser-based games such as Kartrider Rush and Maple Story. Nexon was also the first company to create the Freemium business model and integrate it into their games. About a week and a half ago, just before the start of GDC 2011, we posted about a game called Desert Winds by Southend Interactive which was being demoed on the upcoming Qualcomm chipset featuring the new Adreno 220 GPU. This game looks like a mesh between Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider with awesome graphics. While we naturally report on all things relating to Android games and gaming, we did get to meet up with some other companies such as 2KGames and Capcom to check out their newest releases (plus we did say we would report on other stuff from GDC). So taking a break from Android for one post, here are some great games we checked out. Let us start off by saying, if you are a fan of trains in any sort of way either with trains sets or just watching trains, you'll pretty much wet yourself when you see this upcoming game for Android. Properly called Trainz, developed by n3v games, this is a hardcore realistic train simulation game with a ton of goodies at your disposal. We got to sit down with a few developers from Australia and even though they are mostly iOS developers, they are planning to bring their games to Android as well. One such developer is Tin Man Games which produces the series called Gamebook Adventures. These are a 'choose your own adventure' type of game. Bigpoint, one of the more major browser-based gaming companies out right now, can see the promise in mobile gaming and Android as well. They are planning to bring as many of their titles to Android in the near future which is great if you've ever played a Bigpoint game. All of their games are MMOs and generally high quality 3D graphics. Unity3D had a fairly large booth at GDC 2011 and among all the goodies they were showing off was their new set of tools dedicated to Android game development using Unity3D. We also got the low down on Union for you developers who are interested in having your Unity-based games in the Union showcase. As you may have expected, the Xperia Play was all over the place at GDC 2011 and we had plenty of time to play lots of games on them. While most games being played are already out for Android devices, some are not, such as the Bruce Lee game. There was also a lot of news about the Xperia Play and also a lot of news missing. |
