Blizzard and nVidia team up, bring official BlizzCon 2011 app to Android

BlizzCon 2011 is only days away and it seems as though nVidia and Blizzard have teamed up to bring an official BlizzCon 2011 app to Android for those of you who happen to be going to the event. The app will help you plan what you are going to do at BlizzCon, where to go and all that other good stuff you find with convention apps.

We have some ideas as to why the team up between nVidia and Blizzard in regards to this app for BlizzCon but first, here is what the app will feature:

  • Plan your day – Review the details of the official events taking place at BlizzCon, and then add the ones you’d like to attend to your calendar. You can sort your events by day, time, game series, and more.
  • Catch your favorite events – Set alerts for any event on your calendar to make sure you get to it on time.
  • Chart a path – Zoom in on the exhibit hall floor with a complete map of BlizzCon. Use it to quickly find the location of a panel, meet up with your friends, or just figure out where you’d like to go next.

So why would nVidia be involved with an application for an event like BlizzCon? There could be a couple of reasons which we can thing of:

  1. nVidia makes GFX cards for desktop and laptop computers as does ATI. This could be one way of nVidia showing their sponsorship for BlizzCon and get more exposure during the convention.
  2. Blizzard has other mobile apps for Android relating to World of Warcraft so it wouldn’t be surprising if there is an announcement for WoW, Starcraft or Diablo 3 and Android in some fashion whether it’s companion apps or more. This companion app for mobile is becoming a trend not just with Blizzard and their games (like the remote auction house, guild chat and armory for Android) but for other games as well such as Guild Wars 2 and their companion app.
  3. We can already rig up a tablet to play World of Warcraft and other PC games through streaming them from your PC, to the cloud, to your Android device through services like GameString. It is feasible that there could be an announcement for a mobile optimized World of Warcraft, Diablo 2/3 or Starcraft game. This is a bit far fetched but it is certainly possible.

Either way if you are planning on attending BlizzCon 2011 then you will probably want to pick this app up off the Android Market. It is available for free and the layout is pretty slick. BlizzCon 2011 happens on Oct.21-22, 2011 and we will keep an eye on it just in case something is announced. Anyone want to guess as to why nVidia and blizzard teamed up for this particular app?
