Ouya 2.0 slated for release next year along with new controllers

Ouya said, back before the console launched, that their Android-powered console would see new versions of it being released with updated hardware on a regular basis. The company did warn everyone that this would basically mean that a new console would be released every year or pretty much every year as long as their is a substantial upgrade in hardware to do.

Well it seems that plans for Ouya 2.0 are already underway and the new console is slated for release sometime next year. Along with the upgrades in hardware the console will receive, the company plans on having new controllers designed as well, leaving the current design behind.

Our plan is to have Ouya 2.0 sometime next year, we haven’t finalized the date of that. We’re still determining what exactly we want that to be. For the hardware, we are looking at different chips. We are looking at what type of performance we want. – Julie Uhrman, CEO of Ouya

The last part of Uhrman’s statement is an interesting one as it doesn’t confirm that Tegra 4 will be their next chipset. This means we could see a Qualcomm Snapdragon inside Ouya 2.0 which is interesting since most consoles tend to stick with one chip brand. Hopefully this doesn’t screw up developers who have built their games around the Tegra processor. This also means that the promise of backwards compatibility for existing games isn’t necessarily a sure thing, at least in regards to game that were developed with the Tegra processor in mind.

As for the new controller, Uhrman says the company has been listening to feedback from current Ouya owners stating that “iterating that software, fixing the triggers, fixing the thumbsticks and if that doesn’t work, we’ll iterate it again and if we decide that’s not the right path, we’ll change it.

Right now there really isn’t a time frame for when Ouya 2.0 will hit the market or the new controllers, only that we should expect it to arrive in 2014.
