Scaleform have been in the UI (User Interface) industry for some time now specializing in user interfaces for some pretty mage PC/console games. Their update to GFx, version 4.0, will be bringing new features and optimizations for game developers in the mobile arena to use when creating their user interfaces for their games.

Scaleform will be officially unveiling all the goodies at MWC 2011 that will be coming in GFx 4.0 but here is a rundown of some of the more bigger, mobile-centered features you'll find.

Scaleform GFx 4.0 Mobile Development Features:

  • Optimized for mobile devices — Scaleform GFx is now highly tuned for iOS and Android devices, as well as other OpenGL ES-accelerated systems.
  • Multi-threaded architecture and rendering — As mobile chip sets move to multi-core, Scaleform GFx will take advantage of the multiple threads to deliver lighting fast, graphically superior applications on mobile devices.
  • AMP Profiler — The Analyzer for Memory and Performance (AMP) tool provides a comprehensive view of the CPU usage, rendering stats and memory allocation developers need to remotely tune applications as they are being developed for mobile devices.
  • Mobile UI Kit — To get mobile developers up and running faster, Scaleform is releasing a new Mobile Kit, which provides an easy-to-use, out-of-the-box starting point to rapidly design mobile applications.
  • Multi-Touch — Scaleform added support for Flash 10.1’s multi-touch API, making it easy to create applications that take advantage of two or more simultaneously inputs – such as pinch to zoom and rotate.
  • Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) — Scaleform GFx 4 supports stereoscopic 3D rendering of Flash UIs and games on the new generation of auto-stereo 3D mobile gaming devicesas well as smart phones and tablets, including those equipped with MasterImage's auto-S3D cell-matrix parallax barrier screens.

This will be completely compatible for developing with all major mobile platforms including Android of course! Feel free to check out the full press release below. The Stereoscopic 3D feature looks interesting for all those who have wanted to dabble in that area. If you are wondering where you've heard about Scaleform before, they were demoing Scaleform using Unreal Engine 3 at GTC 2010 specifically about glasses-free 3D gaming on Android.

New features in Scaleform GFx 4.0 enable the creation of graphically rich, high-performance Flash-based applications, interfaces and games for iOS and Android devices

GREENBELT, MD – January 28, 2011 – Scaleform® Corporation (Scaleform), the leading provider of Flash®-based user interface (UI) and 2D graphics solutions for videogame developers, announced today a set of new features and optimizations for Scaleform GFx 4.0 designed specifically to accelerate the development of highly immersive, lightweight applications, interfaces and games for iPhones, iPads, iPods and Android-based phones and tablets. The new features will be showcased at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain (Feb 14-17) in the Imagination Technologies booth hall 1, stand 1D45.

Scaleform is now expanding the capabilities of GFx 4.0 to allow mobile device manufacturers and developers to rapidly create 2D and 3D applications, UIs and games for mobile devices running iOS, Android, and OpenGL ES. Key new features include a multi-threaded architecture and rendering engine, compatibility with iOS and Android, multi-touch support, stereoscopic 3D, and a Mobile UI Kit to help developers get up and running faster.

"The inclusion of advanced features like the new multi-threaded rendering engine to accelerate mobile content brings Scaleform’s power and extensibility to a completely new market," said Brendan Iribe, president and CEO of Scaleform. "Not only can game developers familiar with Scaleform use it to create immersive mobile games and interfaces; any application developer can now use Scaleform to power graphically rich apps and custom user interfaces for many of the most popular mobile devices available today."
