RTS game fans who own a Tegra 2 Android device are in for a real treat. While the selection of RTS (real-time strategy) games on the Android Market are slim but mostly all good, War Drum Studios is getting ready to unleash theirs onto Tegra 2 devices. History: Great Battles Medieval will feed that need for a serious RTS game.

While this is an RTS game at heart, it features RPG elements that will allow you to develop your army as you pass through each battle. You'll be able to gain experience, abilities and equipment to customize your troops making them go from grunts to serious soldiers. Where this game will shine is through the troop animation with will be asynchronous, meaning each troop in every unit will moving uniquely instead of the usual one action animation per unit to signify an action. You'll have troops slashing swords and shooting arrows in various ways and at different times making it look like a real battle would.

We got to see this first hand back during CES 2011 and talk to the developer about History: Great Battles Medieval who told us that the game will can have a few hundred troops (something like 600-800 if memory server me correctly) on the field at any given time, all animated and doing their thing without seeing a performance drop. That is a lot of troops. This isn't including the blood spraying when a troop gets hit with a sword or your archer launching a barrage of arrows into the sky. It's like an epic period movie was made into a game.

Features:

  • Free form quest map that allows players to decide when and where to fight within a historical framework.
  • More than 20 different units all accurately researched and carefully modeled in amazing detail.
  • Almost infinite number of equipment combinations.
  • Specialise your squads with over 100 unique skills.
  • Play as the English under the Black Prince or the French under Joan of Arc.
  • Innovative Battle Card system that gives bonuses and penalties in battle.
  • The most detailed and realistic medieval combat model ever created.
  • 3 Modes of gameplay: Full Campaign, Custom Skirmish and Local WiFi multiplayer

This game highly detailed in both the graphical sense as well as gameplay. You'll be passing through famous battles in the medieval period of history that will have you thinking tactically and figuring out strategies. It will be interesting to see how the User Interface will scale between tablets and phones when this is released.

If you look at the Tegra Zone app on your dual-core Android device, you'll notice that this game will be released this month so the wait is almost over. However, if you don't own an Android Tegra 2 device and you are an RTS game fan, you may want to consider getting one. We've included a preview video of History: Great Battles Medieval running on the XOOM courtesy of AndroidTapp since we were too busy drooling over it at CES to film.
