Wednesday Morning WTF: Minecraft fans make a map of the Earth in-game... and it is (almost) to scale!

Since Minecraft is being debuted on Android next week at E3, we figured today's WTF segment is a nice way to get you a little more revved up for it. Granted it will be exclusively for the Xperia Play at first but will land on other Android devices soon after. Today, we have a custom map that is just insane.

We have seen a lot of things in Minecraft already that have been very impressive. Everything from functioning computer circuit boards to calculators that actually do simple math with the use of switches, to massive structures with lots of little accessories. However, this map has to take the cake when it comes to the sheer craziness that had to be involved when building it. It is big, it is highly detailed and it is Earth. Not impressive sounding just yet? Did we mention this map is to scale?

Minecraft fanatics over at MinecraftForums.net have put together a map, that is scaled 1:1, of the Earth. If that hasn't got you going "wtf that is insane" then this next bit of information will. Not only is this map to scale, and fully playable, it includes cities, tree, rivers, caves and everything else. It also comes with the appropriate ore-dumps and biomes. Here is the official description from the map creators:

“The world is fully playable (includes ores, trees, etc). Elevation has been scaled to fit the constraints of a Minecraft world. Sea level was adjusted to 40 blocks which puts Mt. Everest at 121 blocks high. The Earth was generated with various images from NASA (including landmass, satellite, elevation, and vegetation maps) using a custom python script incorporating codewarrior’s pymclevel python library.”

The file size is massive as well, measuring in at a huge 3.5GB uncompressed. It is available for download should you want to install it and try it out in single-player or multiplayer on your own PC/server. One thing to keep in mind though, if you have a small server, you probably won't be able to run this map. The official server that is hosting this map crashed due to being overwhlemed with people downloading this map when connecting to the server to play it. According to reports, if you connect to this (or your own server) to play this map, it will take approx. 10 hours to complete the download so you can actually play it.

Edit: There are some people saying this isn't exactly 1:1 scale which is fine. It is actually 1:1,852 scale thanks to Logan Smith in the comments below. Either way, it's pretty damn impressive.
