Subatomic Studios is getting ready to unleash their upgraded version of the highly popular Tower Defense game Fieldrunners. The original version of Fieldrunners found quite a bit of success over on iOS and this new updated HD version will be exclusively available only on Android. Even better, it'll be free for the first 24 hours!

Fieldrunners HD is a great looking Tower Defense game with pretty awesome eye candy to go along with it. Not only will this be exclusive to Android, but this will be Subatomic's first release onto the Android platform. The original Fieldrunners wasn't limited to iOS either but was also made available on the PSP and DSI for those of you wondering if this is the same game.

Just like other Tower Defense games, you will have a selection of 'towers' at your disposal to destroy waves of enemies with as well as plenty of upgrades. Fieldrunners HD will be landing on the Android Market this Thursday and will be free for the first 24 hours. If you don't manage to snag a copy then, it will only cost you $2.99 after the first 24 hours. Full press release below for your reading pleasure.

Update June 27th, 2011 4:25pm: Subatomic Studios just send us an e-mail informing us of a change of plans. Due to how the Android Market works, developers can not upload a game for free then change it to a paid game. We thought (hoped) they had found a work-around for this but unfortunately not. Instead, the game will be available on the Android Market for the first 24hrs at $0.99 before going to the regular price of $2.99. Still a pretty awesome deal. FieldRunners HD may still end up free on launch day but it may be through a 3rd party app store and not the Android Market. When it launches, we will be sure to let you know!

Fans will be able to download the full version of the game at a discounted rate of $0.99 for the first 24 hours, after which the game will continue to be available at the standard price of $2.99.

It’s a very exciting time to be working on the Android platform,” says Jamie Gotch, CTO of Subatomic Studios. “Big names like Plants vs Zombies, Cut the Rope, and Angry Birds are all experimenting with interesting strategies on the platform. So, when the time came to discuss our release on Android, we had to ask, ‘How can we launch Fieldrunners HD in a way that lets us try a creative, new strategy while doing something special for our fans?’ The answer was simple: Launch the game for free.”

Fieldrunners HD, the most anticipated and visually stunning game in mobile Tower Defense history, is now coming exclusively to Android with updated hi-definition graphics, and it will be free to download on launch day! Defend your base and control the field using a diverse selection of upgradeable towers in an epic adventure. Master a wide array of tactics and strategies to help you stand victorious against countless waves of unique land and air combatants! Do you have what it takes to defeat the fieldrunners and rise to the top as the ultimate Tower Defense champion? Find out now in Fieldrunners HD, only on Android, available for free during the first 24 hours after launch!

Bringing Fieldrunners HD to Android is a great opportunity for us to reach out to a whole group of people that may have not had the chance to play our game yet,” says Leo Montenegro, Creative Director of Subatomic Studios. “We really wanted to craft an amazing experience for Android users, so we updated all of the artwork - everything is now in high definition - and we’re giving them a chance to grab the game for free, which is something we’ve never done before. So, I hope all you Android owners take this opportunity to pick up this fantastic Tower Defense game!”

One of the first runaway successes on the iPhone, Fieldrunners has won an assortment of awards, ranging from the prestigious “Best Mobile Game” and “Achievement in Art” awards at the 2009 Independent Games Festival, to being featured on the cover of TIME Magazine as one of their Top 10 Games of 2008, where it was listed amongst such titles as Grand Theft Auto IV, Little Big Planet, Gears of War 2, Rockband 2 and Spore.
