Hoping EA will release glasses-free 3D games for Android? Don't count on it.

For anyone hoping that perhaps EA would be releasing any of their current or future games onto Android in a 3D-capable version may be out of luck. EA today has released some new information regarding their outlook on 3D gaming and it isn't that great.

Today EA announced that it doesn't see the benefit regarding 3D gaming. While this statement was applied to console gaming, it is a safe bet to take that and place it into the mobile sphere. While glasses-free gaming on Android phones is somewhat popular, only recently have devices come out with fairly good quality 3D effects. The Optimus 3D for example will be able to convert games built with Open GL into 3D-capable games when it gets it's Android 2.3 update. Granted the quality won't be as good as something built specifically for glasses-free 3D gaming but it's a nice step in the direction of portable 3D gaming.

Unfortunately many people believe the whole galsses-free portable gaming concept on your phone or tablet is nothing more than a gimmick, which is it in a way. With EA making this statement about 3D gaming with consoles, the fact that sales of 3D-enabled TVs haven't been that great so far won't entice the developer to look at portable devices and think that it's going great there, just not in a console concept.

We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "Frankly we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home, at least not yet. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers are looking for.

The problem isn't just with 3D-enabled TVs either. Nintendo 3DS sales haven't been the greatest either and Nintendo is reacting to it finally by making a cut in the price for the portable 3D gaming unit. So if you are looking for EA to bring some 3D-enabled games to Android for that snazzy 3D phone you have, you may be waiting for awhile. Of course if you have an Optimus 3D you might be able to get some sort of effect out of their titles at least.
