It seems as though Snoopy and his friends will be making their way to smartphones and tablets soon thanks to Capcom's new mobile game development studio Beeline. Capcom has signed an agreement with Peanuts Worldwide for rights to use Snoopy and friends in an upcoming social game title.
While the press release does not mention specifically what mobile platform this new social game will be released on, stating 'smartphone' and 'tablets', this usually means more than just iOS even though iOS is getting the first release this Fall. This means we could very well see this new social game featuring the Peanuts characters on Android not too long from now.
Since taking over ownership of PEANUTS, our overall strategic goal has been to continue to make the brand relevant to younger generations," said Neil Cole, Chairman and CEO of Iconix Brand Group, which owns Peanuts Worldwide. "In order to accomplish this, we had to substantially expand our efforts for PEANUTS into the digital, web and social categories of our business, which is demonstrated in the initiatives outlined in this first phase announcement.
This isn't the first time Capcom as dabbled in the social gaming arena with the rights to other characters. Their Smurf Village game has been highly successful on iOS since it's release although not without problems. It was so popular with the young kids that in-game purchasing ran out of control for a short period of time as kids would buy tons of in-game items which made their parents see huge bills. Capcom has since limited the purchasing in-game and so we can expect to see this sort of restriction when this new Peanuts game comes out.
The new Peanuts game is set to release on iOS this Fall with the Android version following shortly after. Check out the full press release below for details on this and other digital Peanuts products coming soon.
