Probably one of the most well known arcade side-side scrolling space shooter games to come out back in the day is R-Type. Well publisher DotEmu will be bringing the classic 1987 game developed by Irem back to life except this time it will be on Android devices and not big arcade machines.

R-Type will land on Android just like you may remember it from back in the day, in full pixel graphic glory and all. You'll be piloting the R-A9 Arrowhead just like in the old days too with all the power-ups and bullet dodging you can handle.

Features:

  • Large amount of power-ups and items to collect
  • Strong enemies and bosses at the end of each level (total of 8 levels)
  • The famous Charge shot for more power
  • OpenFeint support
  • Same awesome retro graphic goodness
  • Two difficulty modes

R-Type will also be coming with a new control set they are dubbing the 'full touch controls' which will allow you to directly control your ship. While that doesn't help us a lot in knowing what exactly they mean by that, we are guessing it's referring to the ability to touch anywhere on the screen to control your ship, not just a virtual d-pad.

R-Type will be available Sept 12th on both the Android Market and the Amazon App Store. No word yet on pricing but you can check out the full press release below.
