Out of all the old school games you've played, chances are you've had a run-in with Boulder Dash. If you haven't, then you missed out. Good news though if you did miss out, you will get a second chance to play this old school addictive game thanks to Herocraft.

Herocraft is partnering up with First Star Software to bring this '80s classic to mobile and, of course, this means Android. Just like in the original games you will be helping Rockford and Crystal navigate through caves to collect diamonds while avoiding traps, monsters and falling boulders.

In Boulder Dash XL the game gets a graphics overhaul with new 3D eye candy while keeping the gameplay the same from the originals. If the new 3D graphics are not your thing though, you'll be able to play the game in Retro mode with all the cool retro graphics from the original game which will make you purists out there happy.

Currently Boulder Dash XL is in development for Android smartphones and tablets so no exact date on release has been announced, just that it will be available in the 2011 holiday season. Same goes with pricing. Full press release below.

Boulder Dash® - XLTM coming to SmartPhones & Tablets this Holiday Season!

Kaliningrad – 31 August, 2011 – HeroCraft Ltd and First Star Software, Inc. are pleased to announce the development of Boulder Dash® -XL™, the critically acclaimed new version of the 80's retro classic, for SmartPhones and Tablet devices, including iOS, Android and Windows Phone 7.

Since its original release in 1984, many millions of units have been sold in the Boulder Dash® series across numerous computer and video game platforms. Four Boulder Dash® games have been released into the coin-operated arcades. Bursting onto the gaming scene nearly 30 years ago Boulder Dash's brand of frantic action and mind bending puzzle fun has seen the original game described as “one of the finest video games ever written”.

Recently launched on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE Arcade service, Boulder Dash® - XL™ has received warm praise from the critics.  These ports to a broad selection of mobile devices will help to ensure long-time fans as well as a new generation of players have the chance to help Rockford™ and Crystal™ navigate through numerous caves to collect sparkling diamonds; devious traps; while avoiding monstrous enemies; and, of course, those frightful falling boulders!

Alexey Sazonov, Sales and Marketing Director for HeroCraft commented, “we're huge fans of the original Boulder Dash® and are thrilled that we have the opportunity to bring this game up to date with stunning new graphics for the latest cutting edge SmartPhones and Tablets.”

“Co-developed with Catnip Games, the new game modes and brilliant caves found in Boulder Dash® - XL™ are sure to thrill and challenge casual and hardcore gamers alike. We looking forward to working with HeroCraft as we co-publish the game across a broad range of mobile devices”, said Richard M. Spitalny, President of First Star Software, Inc.

Boulder Dash® - XL™ will be coming to SmartPhones and Tablet devices in time for the 2011 holiday season.
