If you have ever played in an arcade back in the day then chances are you've dropped some coins into the R-Type game that has been a classic in the arcades for awhile. Last month we reported on this awesome '80s shooter coming to Android and now the wait is over.

Brought to us through developers DotEmu, R-Type is straight out of the arcade and now available on your Android device. DotEmu has kept the game just the way it used to be with all the levels, items, retro graphics and abilities that the original arcade game came with and built some touch screen controls so we can play this 1987 classic which was originally developed by Irem.

Features:

  • Large amount of power-ups and items to collect
  • Strong enemies and bosses at the end of each level (total of 8 levels)
  • The famous Charge shot for more power
  • OpenFeint support
  • Same awesome retro graphic goodness
  • Two difficulty modes

The good news is that you won't have to use an onscreen D-pad or anything like that to control your ship and instead you will be able to touch anywhere on the screen to controls your movements. You can pick R-Type off the Android Market right now for $2.99 and get that retro gaming fix you need this Monday morning. Full press release available below for your reading pleasure.

Thanks to Roger Lyons for the heads up!
