Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Survival Mode and other Android devices

Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been out for a short while now for the Xperia Play which currently features the classic mode (or creative mode depending on what you like to call it) where you can get to build whatever you like. Daniel Kaplan of Mojang has come out to give a general idea of where things are heading including Survival Mode.

The main bit of news comes in two parts from a conversation between Daniel Kaplan of Mojang and PocketGamer where Daniel talks about bringing Survival Mode to Minecraft: Pocket Edition as well as actually bringing the game to other Android devices. While no actual time period was mentioned as to when this all would happen, Daniel did go on to explain which will be first.

According to the conversation, right now the focus is on bringing Minecraft: Pocket Edition to other Android devices. Currently being worked on are the onscreen controls for Android phones and tablets that do not have the controls that the Xperia Play comes with.

We have tons of stuff being planned but we haven't nailed out the whole release yet," said Daniel Kaplan, Mojang's press representative. "The things I can say right now is we're working on the touch controls for phones that haven’t got the PlayStation buttons, and we're working on making sure more people are able to play the game. After this iteration with the touch controls, we will start adding and optimize new stuff...

I know a lot of people are waiting for Survival mode and so am I. We need to tweak and rebalance a lot of stuff before we feel confident about releasing mobs and what-nots.

So once the onscreen controls are worked out, Mojang will then go about bringing Survival Mode and other features that are in the PC version over to the Android version. Hopefully we see the non-Xperia Play Android version arrive soon. Notch did mention that it would be a month or two after the Xperia Play release before we could see the rest of the Android world jumping on to play.
