Hidden Gem: Block Rogue is a Sokoban game that's never quite the same

We have got a new member of the Hidden Gem family going by the name of Block Rogue which was developed by Buzz Monkey Software. Block Rogue is a Sokoban style game where you'll be solving the puzzles in each stage in order to get to the exit and progress onto the next one.

While the production value of this game is fairly high, it comes with quite the in-depth storyline which you really don't find in a Sokoban game these days, not really. Usually it's a loose storyline about someone or something needing to find their way home. In Block Rogue, you are helping Ilbin to uncover the truth about why he is suddenly lost in a dungeon with no memory of how he got there or why he is even there.

Graphically, Block Rogue has a great indie flare to it with how the art is done. Indie games always have some sort of element that always makes them unique and stand apart from big named titles that tend to usually sport a generic feeling when it comes to the visuals. While the graphics are detailed, they feel very soft, almost as if they were done with pastels but smacks of a retro gaming influence and the creatures are unique, if not borderline cute, including Ilbin himself.

Block Rogue however comes with two great features. It will automatically save your game so you can jump in and out of it at any time. Playing it while waiting for the bus and the bus shows up? Just exit the game and start back up when you are able to do so. The other great feature is one that also boosts it's replay value.

Each level in Block Rogue is randomly generated so playing the game through is different every time. The puzzle are hard enough as it is but if you think you can just memorize the game and play through a second time easily, that isn't the case here. This makes Block Rogue an almost rogue-like game as it's randomly generated as you go each time you play. While most Sokoban games have you pushing blocks, there are all sorts of things to deal with in each stage from death rays, switches to flick and more.

Amazingly enough, considering the popularity of Sokoban games, for those of you who enjoy puzzle games and frustrating yourself with them, Block Rogue has only been downloaded enough to be in the 100-500 mark. You can download Block Rogue off the Android Market for $1.99 if you are up for some unique Sokoban gaming.

Thanks to Artur for the heads up!
