iOS and Android crushing Sony and Nintendo in the portable gaming markets

We don't generally post statistics here or some of those cool graphs and charts like everywhere else but this one is an exception to the rule. Flurry has released a comparison chart of mobile gaming from 2009, 2010 and estimating 2011 results and who are the dominate forces in that sector.

While back in 2009 Nintendo had a massive 70% foot hold on the market, by the end of this year it is estimated at being only 36% instead. Sony's PSP is also shrinking down from 11% to 6% by the end of this year. So who are the biggest growers then if both major mobile gaming platforms are shrinking? Android and iOS. Both platforms combined will have a total of 58% of the mobile gaming market share (estimated) by the end of this year.

That is a pretty big increase and chances are that will only grow in 2012 as well. The Nintendo 3DS started off real slow and probably won't pick up too much steam. The Wii U, while interesting, probably won't take off too well either. The Playstation Vita is probably the only real promising platform outside of Android that could catch some serious steam although pricing will be a factor in that. Also Sony is fully embracing mobile as well with the release of the Playstation SDK and buying out Sony Ericsson so we could see an increase from them as well.

Sometimes, it's just fun to look at graphs, even for us.
