Sony Ericsson has posted a blog post confirming that the Xperia Play, along with other Xperia devices, will get an Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update when it is ready to roll out for those devices. Currenty Sony Ericsson is working on merging Ice Cream Sandwich with their "Xperia experience".
The source code for Ice Cream Sandwich came a few days early over the rumored November 17th release date by being pushed to AOSP yesterday. Custom Rom are already being worked on using the Ice Cream Sandwich source code and it seems manufacturers aren't wasting any time getting to work to bring ICS to their Android devices. Sony Ericsson, however, won't mention any sort of specific time line as to when these devices will actually receive the update.
More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course.” - Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson did confirm that their entire line of Xperia devices should be receiving the ICS update once the merging of their extra services is done. This includes Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray.
