Dungeon Hunter Review

First and foremost, I must say that this is the first 3D isometric RPG I have played on a little screen. I have played many 2D RPG's and they play very well. With that said 3D isometric does not transition all that well in one glaring and very important area. But with that aside, if this is what we have to look forward to for Android gaming then I must say we are all in luck!

This is a very playable game with lots to do and lots to see. The graphics are very well done, the game play is solid and the depth seems to hold its own. Also there are three character classes to choose from so you have plenty of replay options.

Game play: Very well done, lots of enemies that seem to hold back and not just run up and try to kill you. The AI is pretty decent in this case. The Quests are a bit off sometimes, but the story does flow pretty well. The environment is solid, lots to see for such a small screen and it comes through clear.  It is actually pretty funny that while playing this Diablo 3 keeps coming to my mind.

Graphics: As mentioned earlier the 3D isometric view is great, but has a major downfall. You simply get lost in fights. Once engaged by 3 or more enemies you simply lose track of your character so keep an eye out on your health bar! Other than that the controls works VERY well with the 3D view and you can easily cruse around the environment without fuss. Objects are clear, monsters are pretty detailed for a small screen, and the fonts are nice and clear and easy to read. The special effects look good, but once again on a small screen it is really hard to get that big wow effect out of them, but Gameloft has done a decent job with what they have to work with .

Sound: the Music is perfect for the game and during fights simply disappears into the background so as to not interfere. The sounds effects are of typical quality and come across clear, but all this is dependent on your listing device. The speaker on my phone simply killed the sounds, but the headset was loud, crystal clear and immersive.

Controls: Controls are pretty good. I have a device with issues on dual touch but that did not stop me from enjoying the game. For movement you can use the joystick or "point and click" style which is simply tapping on the screen to where you want your character to move. The joystick worked better due to the fact that the small screen caused to many taps to move across certain area's. Also if you need to move right it can cause you to fire or swing you weapon due to those controls being on the right hand side as well as moving you character to the right when you miss the weapon/action button.

Overall this is a pretty decent game. The one thing that will keep you stuck to the game is that it is not boring and it is not drug down by flaws and issues with the game engine and the game play. Once you pick this up and play through you'll be back to play two more times with two more characters. This game is only available from Gameloft's website for $6.99 (although according to some people at the point of sale it's only $3.oo so if it's a mistake or whatnot, now is the time to buy them before it's fixed! Thanks to Dave for that info!). Reviewed on the Nexus One running Android 2.2 (Froyo).
