Keeping it Casual #2: The Top 3 Miniclip Games

Posted by AndrewH in Game Reviews on November 15, 2012

Miniclip has been doing casual games on the PC for a few years now, and it seems they are starting to spread on to the Android Play store. These games are strictly casual affairs, with simple, bright graphics, polished gameplay and best of all almost all of them are free to download. I have been through all their games and have put together my top 3 in no particular order from Miniclip giving each one a quick review.

Siege Hero

Name: Siege Hero | Developer: Miniclip | Category: Casual/Puzzle | Players: 1 | Version: 1.0.2 | Size: 15 MB | Price: Free |

This game is a mix between Crush the Castle and angry birds, with the object being to destroy fortresses and take down the Knights at the same time. There are a few unique touches added to this system such as the first person view, where you click where you wish your projectile to go. The other nice addition is that you get scenarios where you need to avoid hitting the ‘oppressed’ people within a level, or you will lose large amounts of points. Great news is that the ads are not intrusive, but to unlock the all the stages you need to purchase them (but at 66p its great value).

The Good:

- Nice graphics
- 200 levels
- Addictive gameplay

The Bad:

- The music becomes a little annoying
- The sound effects can be out of sync

Verdict: 4/5

Hambo

Name: Hambo | Developer: Miniclip | Category: Casual/Arcade | Players: 1 | Version: 1.1.4 | Size: 16 MB | Price: Free |

Hambo is a sort of shooter/physics puzzler game where you need to shoot all the pigs to progress to the next level. You can do this by bouncing your bullets of walls, or shooting away the platform they are standing on (if its made of ice) to get a better angle and many other ways that I don’t want to give away. The tutorial is short but effective and the overall gameplay is very polished. Where the game falls down though is through the way it tries to make you spend your hard earned money. You will get timed adds appear, which slows down your progress and after a while just stop you wanting to progress. If this system was better implemented then this would one of the most addictive games in Miniclip’s collection.

The Good:

- Bright visuals
- 200 levels
- Very addictive Gameplay

The Bad:

- The intrusive ads really hold this game back

Verdict: 3.5/5

Plague Inc

Name: Plague Inc | Developer: Miniclip | Category: Casual/Strategy | Players: 1 | Version: 1.0.8 | Size: 25 MB | Price: Free |

What can be said about this game other than it’s a real guilty pleasure. Your aim is to ‘bring about the end of human history’. To do this you must create your “plague” and expose it on the world. It’s great that you can name your plague what you wish and choose which country it starts to infect. The IAPs are well set up so you can have a go and if you get addicted (like I did), you can unlock things just by playing, or if you are impatient you can pay to unlock certain aspects of the game (which will also remove the ads from the screen). On the Nexus 7 it looks great, you almost feel like a Bond Villain watching your plague spread across the world.

The Good:

- Very Addictive
- 10 diseases to unlock
- The audio is unsettling

The Bad:

- A little slow to get going
- Graphics are a little bland

Verdict: 4.5/5

If I did have to choose between the three for a quick burst of gaming, I would probably choose Siege Hero, with its short levels and instant pick up gameplay. My opinion is only one though, and I want to hear more. Which of Miniclip’s games have you found to be the best?
