HTC announced their upcoming Android tablet, the HTC Flyer, at MWC today and it was sporting some pretty decent specs while others left you wondering "why?". The HTC Flyer is also their first Android device sporting the OnLive cloud gaming service which is no surprise after their $40 million invest into the company.

Specs:

  • 1.5GHz single-core processor
  • 7" screen running at 1024x600 resolution
  • 1GB RAM
  • 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP front-facing camera
  • 32GB Flash storage
  • Gingerbread
  • Sense UI

As we mentioned earlier, this will be HTC's first Android device featuring OnLive cloud gaming service fully functioning, unlike the app they released which is more of a game viewer so you can spectate in games. You'll be able to stream games from the OnLive service right to your tablet.

This brings us to our questions regarding the specs. Why a single-core processor and why Gingerbread instead of Honeycomb? With all the tablets coming out featuring Honeycomb, there really isn't a reason to be using anything else for Android tablets, especially since it is made for Android tablets. There is a beefy 1.5GHz single-core processor powering everything but a dual-core processor would have been better for this tablet considering you want to show it off as a choice for Android gamers to consider.

We aren't saying that this tablet will suck when it comes to gaming and, in fact, it should do pretty good. We are just curious as to why the decision to use Gingerbread and a single-core CPU was made. We are going to speculate that it is single-core due to Qualcomm not having their dual-cores and quad-cores ready for public consumption just yet.

Either way it will be a good option for those people who like to play games on their tablets but don't need a dual-core for any hardcore gaming.

Update 8:18am Feb. 15th, 2011: HTC confirmed on Twitter that the Flyer Android tablet will in fact be updated with Honeycomb in Q2 2011. At least it will eventually be getting it.
