With us being at GDC 2016 all last week, there was some news we wanted to get out but just didn’t have the time to do so. Now that we are back, we are catching up on things and one of those pieces of news happens to be nine Sega and Warner Bros games being announced as coming soon for GeForce Now.
In our first part we explored how Sega overtook Nintendo in the early 90’s to become the biggest video game company in the world. It was through attitude, marketing, and most importantly defining themselves as better than Nintendo. Despite the Super Nintendo’s better graphics card and superior sound board, the Genesis took an early lead in the console wars. It wasn’t to last however, as Sega’s odd obsession with the Genesis forged the beginning of its downfall.
Young readers might wonder why the internet is filled with so much lament over the fallen blue hero. Sonic The Hedgehog has become the mascot equivalent of Val Kilmer, depressing us with his bloated antics. Dozens of failed games, countless reboots, and now the Sonic Boom atrocity have all but killed this once great franchise. Sega has even announced they’ll no longer be making console games and be focusing only on mobile and PC markets.
Sega is offering 300 employees “voluntary retirement” and in the process moving focus away from console games and on to Mobile and Online PC games. Sega of America is expected to lose 120 employees as part of Sega’s downsize, and will be moving its offices from San Francisco to Southern California.
Sega (the beloved console company of yore that now produces mobile games) has put the following Sonic games on sale: Sonic 4 (episodes 1,2), Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic Jump.
Sega’s Sonic Dash game has received an update today that brings the notorious Dr. Eggman into the picture. Now you’re probably going ‘oh no Dr. Eggman, what ever shall I do?!’. Well you should kill him and that is the plan with him being in the game now.
Sega has announced their upcoming line-up of games for mobile and out of the five games announced, two of them will be arriving onto Android in the near future. Of course this doesn’t mean that the other three won’t show up, just that these two are the ones arriving sooner rather than later.
Back in June we mentioned that Sega had come on board in regards to bringing their blue hedgehog over to the Android-powered game console Ouya. Well two of their games have finally arrived today: Sonic 4 Episode I and Episode II. Sonic CD is currently coming down the pipeline as well and should be arriving in the near future.
Sonic The Hedgehog is celebrating its 23rd anniversary and to help with the celebration Sega has put a few of the blue hedgehog’s games on sale both on Amazon’s AppStore and Google Play. There are a total of four games on sale for a limited time with savings of up to 70% off.
