Dual-core Snapdragons to include Adreno 300 GPU – graphically capable as PS3

Qualcomm has seen tremendous success with their implementation of the high-end ARM Cortex architecture – Snapdragon. Earlier in the year many Android phones have launched with their first generation Snapdragon chips and today they’ve announced a major leap forward, bringing greater efficiency and nearly 5 times the performance to mobile gaming and tablet devices.

Qualcomm’s newest die shrink – to 28nm will support dual core architecture in a smaller chip design. It’s set to compete with nVIDIA’s Tegra 2, launching early next year in phones. Along with more cores comes more performance – 5 times faster than current generation Snapdragons and they’ll do it using 75% less power. The new chips are clocked at 1.2GHz, but surprisingly won’t run as hot as the older generation chips because of the die shrink. Graphical performance has also taken a massive leap forward. It will supposedly rival the GPU in current generation gaming consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360. It will also add support for rendering games in Open CL 1.1, bring new effects and performance as well.

Qualcomm has big plans.

Along with performance improvements the chips also have support for LTE data networks as well as the usual HSPA+ for T-Mobile and EVDO data support for Sprint and Verizon’s legacy 3G data networks. It will come in two different models (similar to the 8620 and the 8220 CPUs in the EVO and HD2 respectively) to support the differing frequency bands.
