Market update will shorten returns, brings shinier interface

Been looking at a few games you just can’t decide whether to buy or not? Well, you’ve got about 2 weeks to try them out for a full 24 hours before buying them. It comes alongside news that the Market will be seeing an over-the-air, automatic update to all devices running Android 1.6 and above.

Along with the news of the shorter refund window comes an updated Market interface that greatly improves the shininess factor of the Market. Larger 50MB limits have been established on .apks for “better support [of] rich games.” It doesn’t add as much to the browsability of the store as we had expected, adding a widgets and live wallpapers section along with a refined description page, getting rid of those tabs at the top. Unsurprisingly, Google plans to push this update automatically to our phones without notifications, a more common practice for updates like this.

With a focus on improving discoverability and merchandising, we’ve introduced a new carousel on the home and category screens. Users can quickly flip through the carousel to view promoted applications and immediately go to the download page for the application they want. Developers have been very active in creating great Widgets and Live Wallpapers. To make it easier for users to find their favorites, we’re introducing two new categories for Widgets and Live Wallpapers. Applications that include Widgets and Wallpapers will be automatically added to those new categories. We’ll also be adding more categories for popular applications and games in the weeks ahead. In addition, the app details page now includes Related content, which makes it easier for users to quickly find apps of similar interest.
