Dungeon Defenders: what to expect from your phone

Mobile gaming is the new PC gaming with developers now establishing strict minimum system requirements for their games and customizable graphical settings. We’ve organized Android Devices into a comprehensive list according to which chipset they use and what frame rates and hitches you should expect from each type of device.

Qualcomm Snapdragon – 1st Generation/1 GHZ (Nexus One, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G & HD2)

Performance is good enough to be considered playable on Snapdragon devices like the Nexus One or EVO. Their underpowered Adreno 200 GPU runs the game with occasional stuttering and online play is worse. While the game is totally playable by adjusting the settings the graphics become hazy and soft fast. Heat output and battery drain becomes problematic after about half hour of online play. It’s the most widespread chipset right now and their just aren’t enough optimizations to recommend Dungeon Defenders right now on these devices.

2nd Generation Snapdragon (G2, Desire HD, myTouch 4G)

The Adreno 205 GPU in these phones makes them capable of playing Dungeon Defenders on high settings. Expect few stutters outside of network latency in online games. You’ll also see improved battery life and less heat produced from the phone.

Texas Instruments OMAP3 (Droid/Droid 2/Droid X)

Performance is noticeably better on Motorola’s Droids than on Snapdragon phones even with their slower clock speeds. A superior GPU (SGX535) is responsible for the bulk of the processing and it does it’s job nicely. Frame rates stay constant most of the time but WiFi online connectivity is spotty at best and even at close range from the router there are some slight problems with reception and latency. Expect the phone to get hot fairly quickly when playing Dungeon Defenders.

On the Droid/Droid 2 you’ve got the keyboard which turns out to be tremendously helpful in the heat of battle and sorts out the problems I have with touchscreen joystick controls altogether.

EDIT: Sorry, keyboard control doesn’t work in the current version. We’ve contacted Trendy Entertainment about button-based and we’ll let you know when we know more.

Samsung Hummingbird (Galaxy S/Nexus S/Tab)

Dungeon Defenders runs great on Samsung’s Hummingbird embedded smartphones and tablet device. GPU is much more powerful than in the Snapdragon and even the increased resolution of the Tab doesn’t manage to hold it back any. Occasional stutters seem only apparent in online matches. If you have one these devices you’ve got what you need.

Earlier devices (G1, myTouch 3G, HTC Hero/Eris/Aria)

It’s not worth the attempt, at least not yet. We recommend skipping Dungeon Defenders entirely if the Market manages to offer it for sale on your device.

We’ll be keeping this post up-to-date with more categories of devices, and specific issues that arise from each as they emerge. Once Tegra 2 Android devices hit the market, people using those should see some pretty awesome performance. Feel free to tell us what device you are using and any issues, if any at all, you may be having while playing DD:FW.
