Galaxtaxi review – This taxi flies to the moon and back, if you’ll be my passenger!

In today’s world, it’s hard to find a taxi that can get you to your destination of choice within the time you’ve set out. Well you’ll be pleased to hear that future taxis will be fitted with rockets… and they’ll be inter-galactic speed machines! This is great news especially if you need to pick up some groceries on Mars.

Welcome to Galataxi by Measured Software. This game does what you expect it to, you’re a taxi driver in space picking up Astronauts and taking them to there chosen destination. Zooming around in a taxi simulation game has never been so much fun.

Gameplay: Delivering fares to their chosen destination isn’t all you do, some passengers want to go sight seeing and this requires you to get close enough to certain planets for a small amount of time while they take photos and also some passengers want to be shown around planets which requires you to do a full orbit of a planet. I found orbiting the planet quickly tricky but if you use the planet’s gravity to help you round it becomes a lot easier.

While you’re rocketing around, it’s vital that you keep an eye on your fuel levels as they can disappear right before your eyes. Certain levels require you to start off with a really low level of fuel; this is where you have to find a fueling station. The fueling stations aren’t found on every level so be careful while speeding through the galaxy. Also a big pain is the black holes, which have the strongest pull and they are impossible to escape if you find yourself too close to them. If you judge it correct though, you can speed at them and they will fling you out the other side at super speeds which isn’t ideal as usually they’re located close to the planet you are taxiing to.

Controls: This game features really simple game controls throughout the menus and the actual gameplay. The menus are really well made and the animations on the text are really eye pleasing. As for the in-game controls, they’re as simple as can be. You have a joystick to the bottom left of the screen and a thrust button which is default set to a hard button… usually the track pad/ball. This can be changed in the Options to an onscreen button in the bottom right corner.

Maneuvering the ship is really easy and the responsiveness of the ship is lightening fast which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how jerky your hands are. Overall very good controls, after a few go’s I don’t think anyone should struggle with it at all.

Graphics and Sound: The graphics in the game aren’t amazing but the’re not exactly below par either, the ship and planets and so on are looking good and not hard on the eyes at all. Planets are well detailed and all the animations within the game really look good, they help make everything come to life. The little hopping space men look funny and the icons around their head determine what they want to do which is a nice little addition..

As far as sound goes, the thruster sounds and collision sounds are pretty spot on, the sound effects can’t be faulted at all, only the music. Nothing to pull your hair out about though.

Overall: At first glance, I didn’t think this would be my idea of a fun game, but taking punts is what makes little gems like this worth while. It’s not hugely complicated, it’s not the deepest game ever, but is it fun? Yes! Lately I’ve been looking for little games to fill in the gaps between these huge games that are currently being released. This fits the hole perfect, it’s fun, quick, and entertaining.

I’m off now… to a galaxy far far away, in my galataxi, you with me?
