Guerrilla Bob Review: You won’t find any big hairy gorillas here, just Big ‘ole Bob.

Rambo has nothing on Guerrilla Bob! This guy isn’t afraid of anything and neither are his friends. Be prepared for a war, a good kind of war, a nice cartoon styled battle, filled to the brim with lots of fun bubbly goodness. In this game you’re going to be packing some serious heat, as it contains some of the biggest boy’s toy’s ever. No offense ladies.

Gameplay: In the usual fashion, I threw myself right into this game with the hope of it being good and I wasn’t disappointed. Just from looking at screen-shots of this game, you can tell exactly what you’re in for when you try it. Within the first 5 minutes of playing I was hooked; the game is just packed full of fun.

When starting out there’s a brief training session, and I mean brief. It takes around 5 seconds to get through then you’re straight into the battlefield which is how I like it. The game features an auto-lock system which is really good 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time you’ll find that, if enemies are advancing on you and they are further away than the guys behind the barricades, the auto-lock system targets the guys in the barricades even though it’s impossible to shoot them from the front. I have died from this issue even though it might not seem a big deal.

The game modes add a refreshing twist to the gameplay. The arcade mode is where Bob fights for fame, and the mercenary mode is where Bob fights for fortune. Survival mode is a real good feature where waves of enemies are unleashed on you in an arena style battle ground. You can also play all the same game modes through co-op. So far I’ve had trouble connecting to anyone, I’m not sure if it’s my below par internet connection or because there isn’t anyone to play with. I sat for a full 15 minutes with it saying searching for servers I was hoping the multiplayer would run separately from the single player saves, but apparently not. If you want to start a multiplayer game from the start, it deletes your single player campaign annoyingly.

The level design is linear in its layout, which doesn’t leave room to roam around. There are small little secrets hidden just off of the main paths. You’ll see many small little roads leading off to the left or right but often they lead to nowhere. Don’t give up looking down these side paths as they can contain new weapons, power-ups and health kits.

At the end of each level you will find yourself coming face to face with a boss. These are nothing to worry about near the beginning as they don’t pose much of a threat, but later on in the game these do become more challenging. Sometimes the bosses aren’t defeated in the usual way. You may be required to demolish a wall they are located on. I thought this was a nice little way to change up on the usual boss battles.

Now the toys, although it doesn’t feature a ton of weapons, it does feature all the favorites such as rocket launchers, flame throwers, timed bombs, chainguns and grenade launchers. The only advice I can give you here, is to make sure you check out the side roads often as they could contain a little treat.

Controls: I’m sure you will agree when I say this game is very simplistic when it comes to the controls. The in-game controls couldn’t be simpler; you’re given an on-screen analog stick and a pause button. Cleverly they’ve set the fire button to be located anywhere on the right side of the screen which is handy because I often miss-press the static buttons featured in most shooters. There’s nothing much more to elaborate on here, other than the controls really work well.

Graphics/Sound: The graphics featured in the game are polished to a really high standard. I didn’t see any actual glitches within the textures or anything else for that matter. The graphics are reminiscent of those found in Gun Bros., which if you’ve played that game, is nothing but good. All over the game from the game menu to the spinning health kits, everything looks visually pleasing.

All the sounds within the game are really well done. The voice-overs match to the game’s style and the music seems to spare you on to win the battles. I didn’t find any sound glitches either, which is really good to see. With games becoming more detailed, it’s nice to see that the little parts of the game are still up to scratch.

Overall: At the end of the day, this game really packs a punch and would beat Rambo’s killing streak in a heart beat. Although I have to report that I’ve had a lot of feedback saying that it’s been force closing on a wide range of handsets, I personally haven’t experienced any. With their latest update to version 1.0.1 I’m not certain if it has fixed these issues, but as it’s available in the market, it’s safe to try out and then refund if you experience this for yourself. Bugs aside for a minute; this game is a really solid contender next to Gun Bros.

It’s really enjoyable and never feels like a grind going through the levels. To cut a long story short, I’ll be keeping hold of this on my phone, no un-installing any time soon. The single player game is super fun, and when I can get the co-op games working, it’s only going to double the fun.
