Runescape developer Jagex launches closed beta of cross-platform mobile compatible empire building game.

Jagex, who is most know for developing the MMORPG called Runescape, has come out with another game which has currently launched it’s closed beta. 8Realms is not an MMORPG but more like an MMORTS in the fashion of Civilization-style gaming. The way it has been made also makes 8Realms mobile compatible.

Even though this is a browser-based game, it has been coded mostly in HTML along with a little java and no flash or additional need for plug-ins. This makes 8Realms completely mobile compatible and while the UI might be a bit much to handle on a phone, on any sort of tablet it is very playable. Just as if it were another Android games itself.

8Realms is a free-to-play game centered around the Civilization-style gaming genre where you’ll build up your city and attack your enemies. Each building has levels that you can upgrade them to build stronger troops, better weapons and defenses or have better productivity in your city. As you progress through the game, your city will pass through 8 different periods in history: ancient, classical, feudal, renaissance, imperial, industrial, modern, and the future.

“8Realms is a fresh new take on the online empire-building strategy genre. It perfectly balances compelling gameplay, designed to appeal to players with a passion for strategy gaming, and unrestricted accessibility,” Rob Smith, Jagex’s VP, said. “This will offer those who have been underwhelmed by recent strategy games a more engaging experience that they can play in wherever they are.

To play this though you’ll have to be pretty quick and head over to the official game site to sign-up for the closed beta. If you don’t get in though, there are always the open betas.
