Hidden Gem: Deflecticon by MeteorPixel – A great retro game to kill some time with.

It’s time for another Hidden Gem off the Android Market and this time it is a retro-style game that, amazingly, has very small download numbers. Deflecticon is a game inspired by old school titles such as CurveBall or 3D-Pong and features some great glowy retro graphics.

While the graphics are nice featuring that glow enhanced looking retro graphic style, the games simple controls and killer soundtrack wrap the entire package up nicely to form a solid time killer. While you could play this game for an hour or two straight, it really is one of those games to play while you have a few moments to kill and it does it quite well.

Features:

  • Quick paced paddle based action
  • Ever increasing difficulty
  • Multiple AI’s
  • Multiple power ups to use
  • Multiple game modes
  • Great music by Fantomenk
  • 3 Gameplay modes: Normal, Push and Multiplayer

Currently there are only two playable game modes: Normal and Push. Multipllayer is still in development but when that is added it will really make this game great. The developer, MeteorPixel, best describes each gameplay mode:

Normal mode:

“Battle your way through multiple AI opponents each with their own unique power that you can capture and use for your self. From bending time and space to throwing up a temporary wall of blocks you must decide which power is best to use and when in order to defeat your opponents.

Using glancing shots you can produce spin on the ball resulting in devastating curved flight. Mastery of this is key to success and as the levels progress the AI themselves begin to use this very skill against you.

Speed is everything and with successive rallies the balls speed becomes ever greater.

You must carefully manage your health and spin power, a hit in this game does not pause or reset the round! Oh no, as you hit your opponent the fight continues leading to a very fast paced and action orientated game.”

Push Mode:

“This is a continous battle mode where you must first defeat the enemy defensive wall and then punch your way through to the next AI. Every AI you pass means an increase in speed and difficulty.

However you must be careful to not let the AI hit your wall! If they do then you fall back a level and must push on to get back to where you were!”

The soundtrack is all chiptune music from FantomenK and is seriously a great soundtrack for this game. If you are a fan of chiptunes or retro gaming music of any kind then you will really enjoy the music in this game. The shocking part in all of this is that even though this game has been out since July 11th the paid version hasn’t broken 50 downloads and the free lite version hasn’t broken 500. Considering the quality of this game, with multiplayer on the way, and currently both being rated 5 stars, it’s hard to believe more people haven’t played this game.

You can pick up the full version of Deflecticon off the Android Market for $1.97. You can test the game out before you buy it with the free lite version but be prepared to contend with a message popping up every so often asking you to buy the full version which is definitely worth it, especially you like retro games.
