Triandro was a game sent to us last year for review. It sat around on my phone until today before I opened it. I found two things out about this game quickly: it’s complicated and I’m still bad at it after 3 hours of play.

The developer explains the rules better than we can: “Triandro is played by placing stones on the empty points of board. Game play starts with an empty board. The first player begins by placing a stone on any point on the board. The second player places a stone next, and play continues with players alternately placing stones on unoccupied points on the board or capturing stones. Stones are placed on the board in an attempt to create triangles and capture opponents’ stones.” Read more rules for the game on the Triandro website.

The concept for Triandro comes from a board game. It’s loaded with rules that require a thorough read before you will ever win a game, even against the AI. Playing against other clueless players is fun though. It’s a difficult game to wrap your mind around, and that may make it not the game for many expecting action from their game collection. However the challenge provides a sense of accomplishment when you figure it out and start kicking some puzzle-ass.
Unfortunately, Triandro is outdated and doesn’t support qHD resolution or dual-core acceleration (not that it really needs dual cores). Instead it appears as if the game remains suspended in the middle of the screen with large black bars surrounding all sides, something all tablet owners are more familiar with. It’s not clear if the developer has given up on their game or is working on supporting phones and tablets in the future, something we would like to see.
7/10 – We can only recommend this game if you like challenge and deep, strategic rules. If you do, you’re in for a treat here.
