App review: Spotify – US invitation giveaway

Spotify for Android and other smartphone devices has finally launched in the US after launching a while back in Europe. We review the Android app and give away some invites to the PC/Mac/Linux free client/service after the break to Americans waiting to get in.

As you may know, Spotify on desktops uses bittorrent technology to transmit files. The Android client however does not do this for file transfer, instead; mobile uses direct server downloads to maintain high speeds, even if we’ve seen bittorrent work on Android before.

The Android application looks good on both phones and tablets alike, but only functions with the screen in horizontal orientation in Honeycomb 3.2. Definitely a weakness for this type of vertically-focused application.

Music plays quickly over almost every network, and for low bandwidth connections there is low quality streaming available. If you want music that sounds good enable high quality syncing and streaming in settings. Also available in the settings is 3G syncing. Don’t enable this unless you have an unlimited data feature, and if your in the US that’s only Sprint with 4G service, unless you risk throttling or massive overage charges.

The application plays files stored on Spotify’s servers as well as files stored on your SD card or internal memory.
