Vogelstein 2D Mini-Review: A 2D version of Wolfenstein 3D for Android

Vogelstein 2D is a hidden little gem of a game, like a well guarded secret.  It also handily serves as an example of what is great about the Android Marketplace.  Sure, your Shadowguns and your Modern Combats get all the “attention”, but you have the true hobbyists who tinker and release games.  Many times, these games are a labor of love, and I am proud to report that Vogelstein 2D is such a game.

Name: Vogelstein 2D | Developer: Søren Alsbjerg Hørup | Genre: Arcade & Action | Players: Single | Version: 1.0.4 | Size: 1.3MB | Price: Free (Full) |

Vogelstein is essentially a 2D conversion of the grand-daddy of FPS games, Wolfenstein 3D.  From the enemies to the weapons and graphics, the game is immediately recognizable as a tribute to this classic.  Just like Wolfestein, Vogelstein is fantastically fun.  You are charged with escaping a Nazi prison, the only thing between you and freedom is a couple hundred Nazi’s.  While the weapon selection you will use to escape is very limited (3 guns that only vary in firing rate), it is a throwback to the classic gameplay of it’s inspiration.  Through the games ten levels, you will discover secrets, collect treasure, and find yourself engaged in firefights with tons of enemies.

Features of Vogelstein 2D includes:

  • 10 levels filled with treasure, hidden rooms and enemies.
  • Enemies ranging from attack dogs to SS officers wielding machineguns.
  • Three types of guns.
  • Intense melee attack to overcome close foes.
  • Three difficulty levels: easy, medium and hard.

While Vogelstein 2D is obviously not going to compete with the big boys of android gaming, It’s clear that the developer has spent a long time playing and testing this game.  Little touches, such as an auto-target, a generous and well designed movement pad, and well hidden secrets elevate this game to something greater than the sum of it’s parts.  While not particularly long, Vogelstein provides a great distraction for about an hour, topped of by a challenging; but not unfair, boss fight. Highly recommended.
