Rockstar Games confirms no Samsung Galaxy SII support for Grand Theft Auto III

Unfortunately there is a bit of bad news today if you happen to own a Samsung Galaxy SII device and were hoping to play Grand Theft Auto III when it’s released for Android. Rockstar Games has come out to confirm that it will not be supporting that particular device.

Originally the Samsung Galaxy SII was in the list of supported Android devices for when Grand Theft Auto III is released onto the Android Market. In the revised list of supported devices that came with Rockstar’s announcement of Grand Theft Auto III’s release date, that device has been removed from the list. When questioned about it, a spokesman for Rockstar Games confirmed that there would be no support coming to the SGSII but wouldn’t say why.

Currently supported devices for GTA III:

Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

One speculation is the fact that the SGSII is powered by Sansung’s dual-core Exynos chipset. When looking at the list of devices that will be supported when Grand Theft Auto III is released, most of them happen to be powered by Tegra 2 which is in a more wider variety of devices than the Exynos chip is. Of course that is just speculation and only Rockstar knows for sure why GTAIII won’t support the SGSII phone.

For the rest of us that happen to own a supported Android device, we can still expect Grand Theft Auto III to land on the market December 15th for $4.99.
