In the spirit of the holiday season, The Tetris Company calls Angry Birds a fad

‘Tis the season for giving, good tidings and for the occasional company to have a random hissy fit and lash out at another company. This is exactly what The Tetris Company, the people who hold the Tetris license, has done by lashing out at Rovio calling Angry Birds a ‘fad’ while Tetris is a ‘sport’.

In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, The Tetris Company for whatever particular reason decided to go on the offensive this holiday season and their target happens to be Rovio. So what was the reasoning behind calling Angry Birds a fad? According to Henk Rogers, manager of The Tetris Company , the reason is that “once people have played [a game] more than 20 or 25 years you can say it’s here to stay, it’s a sport, it’s no longer a fad”.

While that may be true I wouldn’t go as far to say that Tetris is a sport of any kind and more of just a simple time killer, just like Angry Birds happens to be. This probably won’t be the last time a company speak out against Rovio and their birds considering that not too long ago Angry Birds broke the half a billion downloads mark. Not bad for such a short time. The Tetris Company is probably upset that they are not able to make a movie or invade peoples lives like Angry Birds has managed to do.

Popcorn anyone?
