nVidia states quad-core Tegra 3 phones will be shipping this quarter

Dipping back into hardware related news for a moment, nVidia has stated that quad-core Tegra 3 Android phones will begin shipping this quarter. This fits pretty much right into the time frame mentioned back in mid- to late-2011 regarding Tegra 3 devices coming into the hands of consumers.

Mobile World Congress in coming up and quad-core Tegra 3 phones are expected to have a strong showing at this event with most manufacturers sporting at least one device with a Tegra 3 chip stuffed inside of it. HTC is even planning on having some quad-core goodness with the HTC One X which should make an appearance at MWC 2012 as well.

During nVidia’s first-quarter earnings call, they confirmed that quad-core Tegra 3 devices would getting announcements soon and shipping out to consumers as well this quarter. This is good news for those of you ready to upgrade but were fearing having to wait till Summer in order to snag yourself a nice quad-core phone.

One last little bit of interesting information that came out of the earning call was that nVidia is working on integrating 3G and LTE radios into Tegra chipsets that are codenamed Grey. This is apparently in an attempt to reduce power consumption which, in turn, extends battery life. The next few months should be interesting to watch.
