We don’t usually talk about specific components of Android devices often here but once in awhile there is the exception and this is one of those times. Why? Because your next Android phone, whether it is from Samsung or elsewhere, could be a lot faster than originally thought.
While processors and their speed is crucial to how well and fast your Android device runs, without the RAM to back it up it really doesn’t matter. It is the same when it comes to PCs as well. You can have an Intel i7 chip in your desktop but if you only have 1-2GB of RAM, you really are not using it to its full potential.
Today during the ISSCC Expo, Samsung unveiled their new LPDDR3 RAM chip for mobile devices, stating that it will become the “mainstream DRAM for smartphones this year”. This new RAM clocks in at twice the speed of the current LPDDR2 RAM. During the expo, Samsung showcased a 4Gb LPDDR3 (512MB) chip that was made using a 30nm process which consumes the same amount of power as the LPDDR2 RAM but transfers data at 1.6Gbps, two times faster than LPDDR2 RAM.
Samsung says this has come about thanks to the increase in demand for heavier 3D gaming and HD video usage on mobile devices. No word just yet on when this new RAM will start making an appearance in Android devices.
