[GDC 2012] Hands-on preview of Sonic 4 Episode II for Tegra 3 Android devices

Another game we got to get some serious face time with was Sega’s upcoming Sonic 4 Episode II title for quad-core Android devices. Aside from being able to get a good idea of how the game looks and plays, there is also a rumored release date floating around right now as well although no official confirmation of this date has been given.

The set-up that was going when we played Sonic 4 Episode II at GDC 2012 was that the game was running on an Asus Transformer Prime through HDMI-out to an HDTV. We were using a gamepad to play the game and we are pleased to tell you that it is just as fast paced as all the other Sonic titles in the franchise. Tails accompanies you everywhere and you will definitely have to take advantage of him, through the use of special abilities, in order to get through most levels.

Depending on what you are doing at the time, using Tails will allow you to fly, do a super roll and more which comes in very handy as you will see in the video above. A lot of the stages keep to the more retro feel a lot of us have come to love with the Sonic franchise but further on into the game you are treated to all new levels which were developed using a new in-house developed engine from Sega. The physics also got an overhaul thanks to this new engine as well. The Android version will also come with two exclusive bonus levels that you will have to hunt down.

As it stands right now, Sonic 4 Episode II will be released for Tegra 3 quad-core Android devices first and will have an exclusivity period of about 2 weeks. After those two weeks other Android devices will be getting this new addition to the franchise. As for a release date, it is being hinted at, via Wikipedia, a May 16th 2012 launch but of course that is subject to change if that date is true.
