Sonic 4 Episode II could be the last episode for the franchise

While we are all eagerly awaiting the next addition to the Sonic franchise to land on Android, some rather possible sad news is coming to light about the franchise’s future. According to an interview with the Sonic Team’s producer Takashi Iizuka, Sega currently has no plans for an Episode III.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Takshi Iizuka had this to say about the future of Sonic 4:

We are looking forward to hearing the feedback from the users for Episode 2, but we are currently not planning to release another episode. We just want to see how the users accept this episode.

While Sonic 4 Episode I was a pretty good success commercially, even after delays and mixed initial reviews, and with the hyper for Sonic 4 Episode II building quickly as it nears release, it is still sad to hear that there may never be an Episode III. This decision looks to be more based on the opinion of Sonic Team and their outlook on the episodic format Sonic 4 is using. This doesn’t mean we won’t see a Sonic 5 at some point though or even an Episode III, just that there are no plans for another episode.

Hands-on with Sonic 4 Episode II at GDC 2012

Sonic 4 Episode I was so successful that Sega is adding extra development to the game including new zones and enemies while having Tails be a major part of the game and the return of Metal Sonic. Sonic 4 Episode II is rumored to be landing on mobile around May 16th, 2012.
