Apptopia lets developers auction off their apps and games to new owners

It’s every developer’s dream to make a fortune off their apps, but the reality is only a small percentage of apps make enough money to send a developer into an early retirement. Sometimes apps literally become more trouble than they’re work. Instead of remaining the captain of a sinking ship, developers can choose to sell their app in its entirety on a newly-opened site called Apptopia.

When developers place their app for sale on Apptopia, they are essentially agreeing to part with all aspects of it. The buyer of the app will get access to the source code, the customer list, revenue and any other associated data. Interested parties can bid on the apps they want, and Apptopia will take a 15% cut from all sales. According to GigaOM, Apptopia determines how much an app is potentially worth.

There is a decent number of games for sale on Apptopia such as Let’s Bowl 2, Jump Ball Xtreme and Mega Ninja. For the most part, the asking price for games hovers around a few thousand dollars. Apptopia’s website says apps tend to sell for an average of $7,500.

The risk lies with the buyer who has to figure out how to turn a profit on a product that wasn’t initially able to find success. This could result in a resurgence of existing games, or nothing at all.
