Super Meat Boy for mobile will be similar to Canabalt HD in gameplay

New information about Team Meat’s upcoming mobile version of their hit platformer called Super Meat Boy. While the original game is more of a twitch-based style of gameplay in a platformer format, the mobile version of Super Meat Boy will play out more like a Canabalt type of game.

For those of you unfamiliar with Canabalt, it is a really popular continuous running game that recently arrived onto Android. Featuring a parkour type of theme, Canabalt has you running from rooftop to rooftop jumping gaps and over random objects that fall. Team Meat wanted to bring the same sort of twitch gameplay found in the original Super Meat Boy game but without the virtual D-pad controls, something which Team Meat has a rather large dislike towards.

“[iOS] Meat Boy is the opposite. That’s the foundation of its design. But it’s also on a touch device, so there’s that as well. We want to make a twitch-based platformer that’s not about memorization. I wanted it to be a reflex game. Canabalt is closer to what we’re thinking about. But Canabalt is very surface-level stuff.” – Edmund McMillen, the lead designer of Team Meat speaking about Super Meat Boy’s twitch platformer gameplay and the iOS mobile version

Edmund also goes on to talk about the visuals and overall feel of the game stating that while the game looks more gentle and nice, it gives them the opportunity to make the storyline more vicious, essentially baiting kids into the game thinking everything is going to be peachy then at the end of the first chapter having something like Meat Boy’s face skinned off of him. This sounds great in my book.

Still no word just yet on when we can expect Super Meat Boy to arriving on any mobile platform yet but at least we now know a bit more on how the game will play out when it does launch.
