[Updated] Rovio reveals that Bad Piggies is on its way, arriving on September 27th

Rovio’s next game in the Angry Birds universe is actually the one we have been talking about for months on and off. The new game, which originally was rumored to be focused on the Pig’s side of the story, was later confirmed in August and now we have a release date for Bad Piggies. We also know a little bit more about what this game will actually be.

Rovio announced the release date for Bad Piggies across most of their Twitter accounts including the Rovio company Twitter account, the Bad Piggies account and the Angry Birds account, just to make sure you didn’t miss the fact that Bad Piggies is arriving on Android, along with a few other platforms, on September 27th, 2012. So what kind of game will this be? Well we do know it will still be in the realm of physics-based puzzle games but with a slight twist to it.

At first we figured it would be some sort of building defense game since the pigs are always surrounded by structures to help protect them from those evil birds trying to steal back the eggs they stole fair and square. Somehow, FastCompany managed to get an exclusive look at Bad Piggies and while no screenshots have been released, we do know a little but more about the game.

The swine are stranded on a desert island and have to build vehicles and contraptions to make their way to the delicious eggs that they can’t seem to get enough of. Though there is a three-star mechanic at work, there are no birds in sight, and the pigs are bouncy, jovial, and downright likable–a far cry from the snorting, antagonizing characters from the Angry Birds installments. – FastCompany

From the sounds of it, Bad Piggies looks like it will be a mixed of contraption building and driving. While FastCompany says the game still has the same pick-up-and-play addictive qualities that Angry Birds has, it really is a whole new game on its own. Now that we know a release date and that it will cost $0.99 on mobile platforms when it is released, now all we need is some screenshots to actually see what it looks like.

Update Sept. 4th, 2012 8:31am: A bit more information has been released about Bad Piggies. It’s not a whole lot but it is definitely interesting. PocketGamer has been found out that Rovio used Unity3D as the engine for Bad Piggies. This could mean that this could very well be a more 3D style of game in terms of visuals. Of course until we see screenshots, we really won’t know the visual style of the game.
