Poll: Do you prefer using tilt-to-steer or on-screen navigation buttons for racing titles?

Last week, we did a poll on whether you prefer using virtual d-pads or tap-to-go in action games that require dynamic movement. We’re going to continue discussing on the many different control mechanisms for Android games via our weekly poll, and this week our focus is on racing titles.

I remember seeing an advertisement for the iPhone 3G way back in 2008 on television, and the ad featured what must have been (presumably) an earlier iteration of Gameloft’s Asphalt series (or it could have been an EA racing title, I don’t know). Anyway, the really cool part was that the iPhone was a steering wheel!

I was totally captivated by what I saw at that time. Fast forward 4 years, and basically every single mobile racing title on either Android and iOS uses the same tilt-to-steer (otherwise known as accelerometer) control method. I prefer this over anything else, mostly because it feels natural that way.

Something to brighten up your Monday

However, not everyone likes twisting and turning a hefty 10-inch tablet, for example. Or well, even turning their phones left and right like a madman when they travel on trains. So there’s the on-screen left/right buttons on most of these titles as a fall back measure. A select few (like Mini Motor Racing) have a virtual steering wheel that you flick in the direction you want to turn. And some others (like Riptide GP) have built-in controller support.

So now we throw the question out to you – tilt-to-steer or on-screen navigation buttons? (Note: we disregard the other options as they aren’t as popular as these two) Do cast a vote in our poll, and then follow up on your choice by leaving a comment below. If you have a brand new ingenious solution, don’t be stingy! Share it with us too.
