Josh Slauson’s Asteroid Dasher is a small but fun retro game that brings old school back

Sometimes, among those huge top-chart games we’re starting to get used to every week, there’s a couple of small games that are totally worth trying and getting a look at, either because they’re fun to play or because they keep the hope for indie development alive. Asteroid Dasher brings both reasons to a good extent and brings some classic old school style gaming with it.

Developed by Josh Slauson, Asteroid Dasher is a little game of the avoid-the-asteroids type, that centers around your ship being run over by lots of asteroids and whose main objective is that of avoiding and/or destroying them and surviving as long as you can. Your score is calculated depending on how long you can stay alive and how many asteroids you can disintegrate with your ship. To to that last part, you count on eight power-ups (invulnerability, drill, slow time, among others) and your own personal dash-o-meter. Once you’re fully loaded up, you can dash from one extreme of the screen to the other one, destroying every asteroid that gets in your line and switching gravity towards you.

In the graphics section, you’ll find a black and white environment with a style that may or not remind you of some of those really old school arcade or Atari games. Unfortunately, there’s nothing in the music or sounds aspect of the game. We hope there will be room for some sound effects in the future though.

Asteroid Dasher comes in two versions to get you rolling with: a free “demo” one, in which you can’t enjoy buying power-ups or checking out the 60 achievements that can be unlocked and the other three game modes; and a full version including everything said. You can get either of them from Google Play.
