Disney buys LucasFilm and hints at future mobile games

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours then you’ve probably already heard the news of Disney which bought LucasFilm for a silly amount of money before announcing that there would be a Star Wars Episode VII movie heading our way soon in 2015, with additional movies every two years or so until they really beat the franchise to death, more than it has been already. While the internet focuses on this fact, whether good or bad, Disney has also hinted at mobile games coming from their newly acquired franchise.

The whole deal nets Disney not just the Star Wars franchise but other ones as well. The deal, which cost Disney $4.05 billion, also included LucasArts in the package alongside ILM and rights to properties such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Willow. When asked about gaming at the investors call, Disney CEO Robert Iger had this to say”

‘We’re likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console.” – Disney CEO Robert Iger

Robert Iger did go on to say that when looking at console games, that they would be looking at that platform more for licensing than publishing. Mobile, on the other hand, is completely different. This is because Disney has already seen quite the success publishing games on Android and iOS already which makes their choice to stick to that plan not overly surprising.

With that said, we should end up seeing not only Star Wars related mobile games heading our way soon but other games based off of the other franchises Disney just acquired. It’ll be interesting to see if this effects the upcoming Rovio/LucasFilm game coming November 8th, 2012.
